Keukenhof Castle

Unveiling the History of the Dutch Bulb Region

One of the most famous castles

The Netherlands is world-renowned for its breathtaking tulips, but it also boasts a rich history reflected in its stunning castles. While De Haar Castle and Muiderslot offer fascinating insights into Dutch heritage, Keukenhof Castle (or “Kasteel Keukenhof” in Dutch) is one of the most famous.

Located in the charming town of Lisse, not far from Amsterdam, this castle is nestled within the largest flower garden in the world.

The History of Keukenhof Castle

During the Middle Ages, the area now known as Keukenhof was called ‘Keukenduyn’ and served as a hunting ground for Slot Teylingen’s kitchen. It was here that Jacoba van Beieren spent the last four years of her life in seclusion. The estate eventually became known as ‘Keukenhof,’ derived from its original name.

In 1641, former Dutch East India Company commander Adriaan Maartenzoon Block built a country house in Keukenduyn. Over time, wealthy merchants established summer estates nearby. To protect Keukenhof from potential destruction, members of the aristocracy purchased the estate in the early 19th century. Later, Jonkheer Johan Steengracht van Oost Capellen expanded the property.

Keukenhof transformed into a true castle in the 19th century when Cecilia, daughter of Steengracht, married Carel Anne Adriaan Baron van Pallandt. Together, they oversaw the addition of six towers to the structure. Landscape architects J.D. Zocher and L.P. Zocher redesigned the gardens, giving them their present-day charm. Today, a dedicated foundation preserves Keukenhof Castle, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty and history.
